Develop the practical skills required to safely manage dangerous goods throughout the ground handling process. This course focuses on critical handling tasks, including load planning, stowage and segregation, ULD building, and the physical loading and unloading of aircraft
. Learn to perform essential safety checks for damage or leakage and verify aircraft loads against the Notification to Pilot-in-Command (NOTOC)
. By adopting the Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) approach, this program ensures that warehouse and ramp personnel are competent to perform their specific functions autonomously and safely, in full compliance with the latest IATA DGR standards
Course format
• This classroom course consists of 1 days for Initial/Re-current of instruction delivered by a certified DG Instructor.
• Participant performance will be based on an assessment.
Prerequisite
• Recommended level is Entry-level and Intermediate.
• Recommended level of language proficiency is ICAO Operational Level 4.
What you will learn
Upon completing this course you will be able to:
• Understand the fundamental concepts of dangerous goods, including the application of the legal framework and the difference between hazard and risk.
• Recognize hazard communication including marking and labelling to ensure safe physical handling and stowage.
• Plan the load by determining precise stowage requirements, segregation rules, and cargo compartment limitations.
• Prepare cargo for aircraft loading by inspecting packages for damage, leakage, or signs of hidden dangerous goods.
• Apply stowage requirements which include the proper orientation, securing, and protection of goods from damage, as well as applying ULD tags.
• Execute safe loading and unloading procedures, ensuring all packages are checked for integrity before and after flight.
• Verify the NOTOC (Notification to Pilot-in-Command) against the actual aircraft load and provide critical information to the flight crew or dispatchers.
• Collect and report safety data regarding any accidents, incidents, or occurrences identified during the handling and loading process

• Legal responsibilities and individual roles of stakeholders within the ground handling supply chain.
• Understanding and applying relevant sections of the current IATA DGR for warehouse and ramp operations.
• Load planning and management: Determining stowage requirements, segregation, separation, and compartment limitations.
• Rigorous inspection protocols for checking all cargo for damage, leakage, and indications of hidden dangerous goods.
• Technical requirements for securing and protecting cargo: Applying correct orientation and protection from damage.
• ULD management: Correctly applying ULD tags and transporting cargo safely to and from the aircraft.
• NOTOC (Notification to Pilot-in-Command) procedures: Verifying the actual aircraft load against the NOTOC and providing information to the flight crew.
• Unloading considerations and post-flight checks for the integrity of the dangerous goods transported.
• Collecting safety data and reporting dangerous goods accidents, incidents, and other occurrences.

Certificate awarded
An IATA Certificate of Completion is awarded to participants obtaining a grade of 80% or higher on an assessment. A special distinction is awarded to participants obtaining a grade of 90% or higher.
