Maintain the integrity of the air cargo chain by developing the competencies necessary to act as a critical safety filter. Learn to identify “red flags” and indications of hidden dangerous goods in documentation and physical packages presented as general cargo
. Acquire the skills to correctly interpret IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) to ensure no undeclared hazards reach the aircraft
. This course is designed under the latest Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) framework, offering focused training that empowers your workforce to fulfill their safety
Course format
• This classroom course consists of 1 days for Initial/Re-current of instruction delivered by a certified DG Instructor.
• Participant performance will be based on an assessment.
Prerequisite
• Recommended level is Entry-level and Intermediate.
• Recommended level of language proficiency is ICAO Operational Level 4.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
• Identify and define dangerous goods and understand the legal framework and scope of international and national regulations.
• Differentiate between hazard and risk to better understand the inherent dangers of substances versus the likelihood of an incident.
• Recognize hidden dangerous goods by identifying “red flags” and suspicious indications in general cargo shipments and documentation.
• Understand passenger provisions and forbidden dangerous goods that must never enter the cargo stream.
• Identify hazard communication including the basic marking and labelling requirements for different classes and divisions.
• Verify general cargo documentation (such as Air Waybills) for any indications of undeclared dangerous goods.
• Implement safety data collection by correctly reporting dangerous goods accidents, incidents, and undeclared or mis-declared consignments.
• Respond to emergencies by following the employer’s procedures and general emergency awareness protocols

• Legal responsibilities of key stakeholders and the regulatory framework (global and national).
• Understanding and applying relevant sections of the current IATA DGR for screening general cargo.
• Differentiating between hazard and risk to better identify potential threats in a warehouse environment.
• Identifying potential hidden dangerous goods and developing a sense of forbidden items in general cargo.
• Verifying non-DG documentation (e.g., air waybill) for “red flags” or indications of undeclared hazards.
• Physical inspection techniques for checking packages for signs of undeclared or mis-declared dangerous goods.
• Basic hazard communication: Recognizing marks and labels to detect shipments that should have been declared.
• Reporting to appropriate authorities, including procedures for reporting accidents, incidents, and undeclared shipments.
• Emergency response awareness and understanding employer-specific emergency requirements

Certificate awarded
An IATA Certificate of Completion is awarded to participants obtaining a grade of 80% or higher on an assessment. A special distinction is awarded to participants obtaining a grade of 90% or higher.
